James Callaghan

James Callaghan
James Callaghan [James Callaghan]
(1912–2005) a British ↑Labour politician and ↑Prime Minister (1976–9). During his time as Prime Minister there were many strikes in Britain, including the ↑winter of discontent, and Labour lost the next general election. Callaghan was made a ↑life peer in 1987. There are times, perhaps once every thirty years, when there is a sea change in politics. It then does not matter what you say or what you do. There is a shift in what the public wants and what it approves of. I suspect there is now such a sea change – and it is for Mrs Thatcher. James Callaghan, 1979
